ConstrucTECH

February is Career and Technical Education (CTE) month. A serious problem Colorado’s construction industry faces is a persistent shortage of skilled labor. At a time of record industry expansion, construction employers struggle to find enough qualified workers to meet market needs. Through the partnership of Oakwood Homes, BuildStrong Academy of Colorado, Community College of Aurora, the Construction Education Foundation, and the APS Foundation, we are excited to highlight the ConstrucTECH program, which allows high school students to be empowered through first-hand construction trade experience.

The six-year ConstrucTECH program provides Aurora Public Schools students the opportunity to explore rewarding careers in construction trades, supervision, and management. Through hands-on learning, high school students develop proficiency with tools and industry regulations. ConstrucTECH integrates coursework, experiential learning, and certifications, all focused on career paths in Construction Trades, Supervision, and Management. Upon completion, students have the opportunity to earn an industry-recognized Associate Degree in Construction Management from the Community College of Aurora.

Oakwood Homes recently visited Vista Peak 9-12 Preparatory to see the program first hand. Hear what one student had to say about the experience.

“I’ve really enjoyed all parts of the ConstrucTECH program. I love getting real-life experience and getting to work with my hands instead of sitting at a desk. It’s a lot of work but the work is very rewarding!”
-Ryland, 2nd year student in the ConstrucTECH program and Junior at Vista Peak 9-12 Preparatory
